Phoenix, at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies the first time I photographed a will they said to ask them if I couldn't decipher it and they would get a member of staff with experience to help. Perhaps they'd do the same for Manorial Records. I haven't tried them yet (been putting it off!).

I've just firmly closed my jaw, Elizabeth! Most of the archivists I know haven't got time for their own jobs, let alone helping individuals. Though it never does any harm to ask the question.

I was surprised to be asked, Phoenix - it was just a few weeks ago, when I first started acquiring a huge batch of wills. I haven't finished yet. I'm transcribing 5 or 6 wills a week, I reckon. I've done 3 today.

I just received two wills and an admin bond (which I'm yet to properly grasp) yesterday from Oxford on this one family and they are wonderfully easy to read:-)

They were busy then, Asa, because I received 4 yesterday! I'm amazed at the one for Prudence Parratt, proved in 1704 - anyone could read it as the writing is so clear. The one from 1640 would have caused be problems a year or so ago, but not now.

I got a couple of admin bonds for my 4xgreat-grandparents and they are mainly a standard format, with information filled in. Are yours like that? If so I could e-mail you my transcription and you then only have to change the relevant parts.

Elizabeth, that would be great if you don't mind - yes it's just filled in and the print is not especially clear plus there are a few words or phrases that didn't sound right.

Thanks again :-)

I might even be getting somewhere. The 1702 will is of a farmer of Pishill who mentions three siblings and leaves the farm to brother Thomas. There's a lease from 1719 on A2A for Thomas of the same farm.

My great x 6 grandfather was Thomas as well - his children were born between c1735 and c1757 so he was probably born c1705-1715. All possibilities that may lead somewhere...
