Default US Social Security Applications and Claims Index 1936-2007 - ancestry

Obviously you would need a US or World sub or credits to view it. I've already found some of my relatives on there and got exact dates of death which I didn't have before.

I've found quite a few people, too.

This is the link for anyone who's interested:

Thanks for that, Mary. Sorry I didn't put the link in before!

Hmmm. Out of curiosity I tried to find my mother on there and couldn't! They did their usual Ancestry routine of overwhelming me with thousands of irrelevant results. When I gave them very specifically the name I know she was listed under and the exact year of her death, they gave me exactly one result whose name is not even close and who died a year later. Adding her exact birth or death month/year in various combinations only made matters worse.

So then I went hunting for the SSDI elsewhere (Social Security Death Index) because I know you can access it for free. The nicest one I found was fold3, which I gather is also from Ancestry! Putting in her first and last names, without even her middle initial, she came up 8th on a list of 12 results. And I don't think you need be a member of Ancestry to use this search.

So you might want to try this:
SSDI

EDIT:
It gives you the date of birth as well.

The new database on ancestry isn't the SSDI, Janet. And it gives place of birth, and parents' names in some cases.

This is the link to the SSDI, which was already on ancestry:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=3693

My great-uncle's death doesn't come up on the SSDI but does on the new database. Also his wife, my great aunt, appears on the new database making a claim, but her death isn't on the SSDI (nor on the new database). Maybe she didn't have a social security number of her own?

This is the link to the SSDI on FamilySearch:
https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1202535

My great-uncle and great-aunt don't come up on there either.

Ah. Okay. Thanks, Kite. I should have read Ancestry's description where they say it "picks up where the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) leaves off by providing more details than those included in the SSDI" but also that "you will not find everybody who is listed in the SSDI in this database." I'll have to play with it some more.

It's a pity it doesn't tell you where they died, only the place of birth.

I can't get anyone I already know in the results. Very strange
