Default British sub by parentage

Hi,

On my Great great grandads census it states Brit sub by parentage. Does anyone know what this means or if it has any relevance.

It means he is a British Subject because his parents were British.

Was he born overseas? My GG grandfather was born in India due to his father being stationed there whilst in the army.

Was he born abroad? This is sometimes written if a person was not born in GB.

It says that he was born on Harlington Essex ? Which is what confused me.

I think many people felt they had to justify what they wrote in that column - perhas they didn't think it was enough to be born in the UK, but saying their parents were born here too made them feel better qualified to say they were British!

Edit - see my next reply for a better answer!!!

If you look at question being asked on the census sheet, but ignore the heading itself then I can see why many people would copy response (1) forgetting they only needed to write something if they were born out of the country!
