Where does the money come from?
When William George Hawkins dies in 1929, he's as poor as a church mouse.
But three months later, his widow administers his estate and receives £130. She goes on to administer the estates of two deceased sons and receives a further £130. I have to assume that her surviving children share a further £130. So there was £390 going begging. This money must have come from her side of the family, since there was nothing to spare on her husband's. Mary Jane Elizabeth Darling's paternal grandfather was Cosmo William Darling. He left £225 when he died in 1902 https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...5?pId=15985270. His widow left £1600 when she died in 1904 https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...39?pId=5738622 Their eldest daughter Sarah Noah, apparently a childless widow, left £700 when she died in 1925: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...228?pId=707573 Mary Jane, widow of Lawrence left £467 when she died in 1940 https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...63?pId=5900109 James Joseph, Mary Jane Elizabeth's father appears to have died in 1881 or thereabouts, with nothing to his name. Maria Caroline, spinster dies in 1934, leaving £10k https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...26?pId=5797746 and George Felix, the youngest, leaves £21k when he dies in 1950 https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...=successSource Where does Maria get her money from? The same place as her niece? Any bright ideas as to how I find this out?

I'm trying to remember whether I saw Ann's or not at TNA. I certainly saw Cosmo's but I don't think it said very much.
If money is left to a child who died in 1906, does that imply that the person leaving the money must also have died before that date?

If you mean s/he died when still a child, I guess so.

Oo-er. So you would need a verdict of weakness, not suicide at George's inquest. (His collapsing in front of a gas oven, rather than sticking his head in it.)
That does make much more sense. And of course only his legitimate descendants would get anything.
