Default The leap across the Atlantic!

Looking at many of my DNA matches I'm intrigued to know what resources are available to our American cousins when they arbitrarily state that, for example, William was born in Lancashire in 1747 with an Ancestry source and the next event in William's life is a marriage in 1765 in North Carolina. How can they know that this is the same person? This is just one of many who make the same leap.

Are these researchers making the facts fit their tree or are there records out there that give a place of origin? If there are I may have to think about upgrading to Worldwide Ancestry!
