Thanks for all the info on Elaphant and Castle, Shona.

I wonder if there's any record of who had the 1816 version built? In 1848 Elizabeth Cullimore left her "interest in the public house known as Elephant and Castle" to her nephew. Her husband was landlord there in 1794 but whether he was owner/part owner or leaseholder I don't know.
