I would be surprised if an ex-convict, ex public house keeper cum hawker would have earned enough to pay for his passage home. I think the cost was about 15pounds.

Its possible he died, but his death was not recorded by NSW BDM. They collected the old church burial records after 1856 when civil registration began, going back to earliest days. I am not sure if they may have missed some small burial grounds or some churches did not provide their records. I have Fred Scammell whose death is not the BDM indexes, but I have his burial recorded as 1849 in Boorowa.

I can see Mark Pewter pretty much stayed in the Hunter region, but perhaps he had had enough, moved to Sydney, or Newcastle and changed his name?



But maybe he gave information on the bushrangers .....

FREE PARDON AND PASSAGE TO ENGLAND.
WHEREAS it has been represented to the
Government that the Bushrangers named
and described below, who have lately committed
outrages in the Hunter's River Districts, are still
at large, His Excellency the Governor, with a
view to encourage their more speedy apprehen
sion directs it to be notified that a Free Pardon
and Passage to England, will be granted to any
Prisoner of the Crown who shall give such private
information, to any Police Magistrate, as may
cause the capture of the said Bushrangers.
