Bother, that last one might not be him as I just saw this obit:

Divisional-detective-inspector Goode was born at Caerphilly, near Cardiff, his parents being farmers in a small way...….
So that's not your man and so possibly the last newspaper entry I posted above isn't him either.
EDIT having said that, (btw, the obit's name is Walter) and it does say his career was in London, so what would he have been doing in Birmingham to hear those charges read? Unfortunately Sydenham Road (where the jewellers was) could be anywhere, so maybe not Birmingham. I think there were several reports on this attempted murder case, so if I read more of them I might be enlightened. Have to go out now though.....
