Also several of James' children by his second marriage have the same names as some of the other children of Lawrence and Frances. None of which is conclusive of course.

I would look to see if Lawrence and / or Frances left a will, or if any of their other children did, especially unmarried ones, who might mention James. Also look for marriages for Lawrence and Frances's other children, to see if James was a witness on any of them and see if the signatures match (sometimes it's hard to tell if they do or not, though.) Also look to see who were the witnesses at James's own weddings if you haven't already.
