Apprenticed to a lighterman, Paschal Boileau, 6 Mar 1772, but ran away to join the Navy when he was about 17. Fought at the Siege of Gibraltar. When he returned to England he had to go back to his Master and finish his apprenticeship, and he was freed 18 Mar 1784. Then was clerk to lightermen Bryant & Thompson before setting up his own business as a lighterman.
