I think the date part is when the marriage was entered into the GRO perhaps M means Married. I will have a look at some of mine.

Edit: just looked and not sure now, one of my Aunts got married March 1956 and the date, if it is a date, next to her is 13.10.58. My mum has a date next to her name 26.9.45 preceded by ATA! Possibly Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) I thought she was in the ATS.
