Hi Kiterunner, thanks for your posts.

I'll bear this William Newton in mind and note down the details. I have lots of information of this kind!

We went in the White Hart when we paid a fleeting visit to Saddleworth. The pub is right opposite the church. I took some photos of some historical pictures/documents on the wall. Someone in the pub spoke to us as they said they knew about the history of the pub (a John Newton held it for a while) but they didn't really know much.

We have to be very careful in this district as Newton is one of the most common names around and there are inevitably lots of Williams, James and Johns.

I'm trying to tie in an Isaac Newton as well, who was down in London as a Fire Brick Merchant in 1841, the same profession as Joseph Newton, the brother of William! I wondered if he could be an uncle or father to the men.

I do seem to go round in circles with this lot. There is a strong chance they were non-conformist too, as William's daughter Jane was baptised as an adult at Mossley New Connection.
