Default (39) James William Wheeler , Pte 203317 1/4th Bn Northamptonshire Regt

39th of the Old Boys of St Wllfrid's School, Haywards Heath to die in WW1.

James was born on 3rd Oct 1885 in Haywards Heath son of gardener Charles Wheeler and his wife Harriet. He was christened at St Wilfrid’s on 8 Nov 1885 and in 1891 lived at 10 Holly Bank Cottages in Triangle Road, and later at St Clement Cottage, Hazelgrove Road in 1901 (where the car park is now). His mother died in 1905, by 1911 his father and sisters Charlotte and Harriet were at 36 Gower Road.

I have not found him in 1911, though he married his wife Ellen Watson in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire in that year. Ellen later lived on the Isle of Wight. James died in Palestine on 19 April 1917 aged 31 and is buried at the Gaza War Cemetery plot XV F 9.

Ellen received £2 16s 9d effects on 23 March 1918 and a War Gratuity of £3 on 15 December 1919.
