17th of the Old Boys of St Wilfrid's School, Haywards Heath to die in WW1.

Nelson was born on 5 Jun 1892 in Haywards Heath, third of the five children of James and Ruth Elizabeth Fermor, and was baptised at St Wilfrid’s on 14 August 1892. They lived at 28 College Road in 1901 and his father was a brick maker. In 1911 Nelson was a grocer’s errand boy, but in 1912 he was reported in the Mid Sussex Times as being in court for having stolen 3s 3d from the till after his employer had noticed money going missing and had caught him red-handed.

Nelson died at Gallipoli on 29 Aug 1915 and has no known grave, his mother had died in 1914 and there is a memorial to him on her gravestone in St Wilfrid’s churchyard.

We regret to record the deaths of Private Nelson Fermor, 1/4th Royal Sussex Regiment, and Corporal N.M. Finn, of the same Regiment. Both belonged to Haywards Heath and died of wounds received at the Dardanelles.

His sister Louisa as his legatee received £3 3s 2d and £3 10s War Gratuity while his father was sent £3.
