Default (14) Frederick Sands, Private 7000, 2nd Battalion East Surrey Regiment

14th of the Old Boys of St Wilfrid's School, Haywards Heath to lose his life in the service of his country.

Born in 1888 in Frant, Sussex, Frederick was eldest of the 8 children of James and Ansley Sands. Frederick became a gardener like his father and they moved to Haywards Heath and lived at Market Place near the railway station, his parents were still there in 1911 while Frederick had gone to work in Colgate.

Frederick was living in Mitcham, Surrey when he enlisted in the army, went abroad on 1st April 1915 and died 4 June 1915 aged 27 in Belgium; he is buried at Elzenwalle Brasserie cemetery grave I E 3.
