The main reason for the introduction of civil death registration via the 1836 Registration Act was to enable further study on the causes of mortality. There was no need to record where the person was buried because that was of no interest to the authorities and as there was already quite a public outcry in many quarters against interference by the state in what was seen as a private matter, I expect it seemed sensible to keep the number of questions to a minimum.
