My granny moved from Norfolk to Surrey. She was the eldest child. She found jobs for most of her sisters and the all came south. About four generations earlier, a distant aunt of hers was doing exactly the same thing.
Norfolk had all sorts of problems in the 1800s: the woollen industry had gone, the shoe industry declining and the import of cheap grain from the States spelt the decline of agriculture. Weavers went to Bradford, labourers onto the railways, or to the mines in the North East.
