Quoting The Times, Monday, Jul 23, 1900; pg. 4; Issue 36201

"Agriculture - Crops and Livestock

The brilliant sunshine and intense heat of last week have served to accelerate materially the date of the corn harvest."

It goes on to say there was heavy rain at the end of June and first week of July, so I guess it was pretty humid when the heatwave struck. The 'normal' number of hours of sunshine in July had been reached after three weeks of that month in 1900.
