So, it looks as if John did indeed marry his older brother's widow, Annie Doyle Bradbury, at Camberwell Register Office on 29 April 1899.

The 1911 Census finds the family back in Leicester; John and Annie with eight children born during their sixteen year marriage [sic]. The two older children are Emma, who is 15 and Samuel who is 14, both of whom were apparently born in Dublin. I suspect these are Samuel's children.

John and Annie had at least seven children of their own, the first, Annie, being born at the end of 1899 and the youngest, Kathleen Lilian being born in the spring of 1913.

Interesting stuff. This was one Bradbury tale I hadn't heard.
