When I started doing OH's tree his grandmother was still alive and she wasn't very happy! My daughter, in her childhood innocence, asked her who her father was, and other questions. She even lied about her maiden name. When we found out what it was (from the marriage certificate) my m-i-l wasn't pleased! I somehow think that there must be a clue somewhere as there were two children (girls) with the same father, born five years apart. It wasn't just a casual fling.
OH's great-grandmother was a ladies' maid and it is said in the family that the father was someone of some standing. (But I suppose they would say that!)
