Picking this up again - found the children's baptisms. They gave the addresses which was helpful. First child's baptism has father's occupation as carpenter but on all the others he was called a labourer. Clearly things had gone downhill. They were in Swindon, Wiltshire, so away from the extended family support in Gloucestershire too.
