I have had another reply from the very helpful lady at the Archives:

"It is very feasible that William had married three times. Avebury is the not far from Marlborough

William son of William & Ann Alexander was baptised on 25 July 1786 in Avebury
I didn't have this child.

William Alexander of Berwick Basset, schoolmaster married Ann Clements of this parish on 18 May 1786 in Avebury
I didn't know that William was a schoolmaster! His first children were born in Berwick Bassett.

Ann Alexander was buried on 20 March 1801

William Alexander married Martha Titcombe on 20 September 1801in St Peter’s Marlborough

Martha Alexander was buried on 4 April 1806 in St Mary’s Marlborough

William Alexander married Elizabeth Box on 18 May 1807 in St Peter’s Marlborough

I hope this helps."

It's looking promising, but I still need some more links.
