The closest death to those dates that I can see is a Robert Holden whose death was registered Jul-Sep 1979 Salford, date of birth 22 Oct 1905. But I still say your best course of action would be to get a copy of the Robert Holden / Mary Worrall marriage certificate, because that should give you enough information to be confident of tracing the right family back.

If he was torpedoed in WW2 then it can't have been in 1938 as the war didn't start until 1939. But in any case, WW2 army records are not publicly available in the UK but the next of kin can order the records of a deceased serviceman or woman from the Ministry of Defence. This can take a long time though. And it would most likely be more difficult for you to get access to his hospital records though perhaps not impossible. Certainly the marriage certificate will be the easiest to get.
