Agatha Giacobbi

Libby.... are you awake???

Phoenix has made a fantastic breakthrough by finding Agatha's admon for you at Kew. See post 25 here:

With that information, I've now been able to find more. Just translating it - back soon.

Will try to wake up a bit earlier than the usual Sunday morning!

Well I can't believe Libby isn't here. I tagged her on FB to get here now so hopefully she will turn up soon.

Very interested to find out more.

Sorry...had to take sis to the airport and wanted to get in as much " us" time as possible before I don't see her again for another few years.... Will go check now. Thanks.

Ah, there you are :)

So, I had a look to see if Algerian BMDs were on line, and as luck would have it, they are, because Algeria belonged to France at the time.

I was hoping to discover whether the Lieut Giacobbi mentioned in various newspaper and online articles was François, but so far I haven't. Unfortunately there were loads of Giacobbis in Algeria.

I also looked to see if there were any children born there to François and Agatha, but I didn't find any.

However, I did find Agatha's death! Sadly, she died in 1849, only about 4 months after they were married, which will be why I didn't find any children.

I've translated the death certificate; which is in the next post. I've done most of it, but there are a few numbers and words I can't decipher, if anyone else would like to have a go.

No. 295 Death certificate

The year One thousand eight hundred and forty-nine, 12th March, at 9 a.m.
The following persons appeared before me, Jean François Roland de Bussy, Knight of the Legion of Honour, employed by the Town Hall of the town of Algiers as Registrar responsible for civil registrations for the said town:

Canon Joseph Marie Montera, aged 44, resident in Algiers, and Mr Jacques-Louis Cailly, Chief Customs Receiver, aged 49, resident at 7 Rue Boutin, Algiers

who declared that the said Agathe Ariel, aged 27, wife of Mr Francois Giacobbi, landowner, who resided together at 7 Rue Boutin, Algiers, born in Bristol (England), child of the deceased spouses Miles Ariel and Elisabeth Naylor, died this morning at 6 a.m. at the said residence.

I drew up this certificate regarding the above matters which the appearing parties signed, as did I, after reading it.

Montera / Roland de Bussy / L Cailly

The death's listed in the index twice, but both entries seem to lead to the same image.

EDIT: updated with Janet's help

Mary from Italy 11-01-14 23:54

Hope you had a good time with your sister, by the way.

Janet 12-01-14 00:50

I can only see the results page, not the image. :(

It's calling for a Java plug-in that I'm not at all sure I want to install. In all 3 different browsers, Chrome, Firefox and IE.

Mary from Italy 12-01-14 00:52

Yes, you can't view it without Java, unfortunately. I'll send the image to Libby if she can't view it.

Janet 12-01-14 01:01

Thanks, Mary. So Libby, I'd be happy for you to PM or email me if you'd like me to take a look.
