Sarah Philpot

William Holbrow of Berkeley, Gloucestershire, married Sarah Philpot, spinster, of Tytherton Lucas, on the 12th Apr 1787 at St Andrew, Chippenham, by licence, witnesses John Cherrington (serial witness) and John Eaton.

Then there are some baptisms at Berkeley:
8 May 1788 Elizabeth daughter of William Holbrow of Wanswell Court
11(?) Feb 1790 Daniel son of William Holbrow of Wanswell Court
3 Sep 1793 Maria daughter of William Holbrow of Wanswell Court
19 Jul 1795 William son of William Holbrow of Wanswell Court and his wife Mary
30 May 1798 Sarah daughter of William Holbrow of Wanswell Court.

And a burial - 17 Nov 1799 Sarah wife of William Holbrow of Wanswell Court. So I wonder whether the mother's name on that 1795 baptism is wrong. The rest of the baptisms don't give mother's name.

Can anyone figure out where Sarah Philpot came from, who her parents were, please? I have a group of shared DNA matches whose common ancestors are William and Sarah (assuming she was actually the mother of William 1795) and am trying to work out how they could be related to me.

It seems possible that the mothers name in 1795 is wrong. It would not be the first time - depends on how good the record keeper was, and his state of mind at the time. It might have been scribbled on a bit of paper (maybe without a mothers name, or it was hard to read) and he just guessed?

Does the burial say how old Sarah was?

Familysearch shows a baptism for Sarah Philpott in North Nibley (which is only a stone's throw from Berkeley) in 1753, but I thought she might be a bit old.

There's also one in Bath in 1762 and another two in Minchinhampton, a few miles further north, in 1761 and 1763. There are three baptisms in Wiltshire, not really near Chippenham but they are all in the 1750s.

The marriage records says Sarah was of Tytherton Lucas, in the parish of Chippenham, she might have been working there, but born elsewhere.

About Sarah's parents

North Nibley - Nicholas P and Sarah Vissey married there 1752

Bath - James P and Margaret Payne, married at Bath 1761

Minchinhampton - Stephen P and Elizabeth - cant find any except one in London 1733, but I don't think thats it. 1738 at Minchinhampton, Stephen married Mary Addis.

Thomas P and Ann Ackford, married at Minchinhampton 1761

Do any of the names or places ring any bells for you?

I have several instances in a village of Sarah being rendered as Mary. (Parish gives Mary, GRO Sarah) I suspect that in those cases Sarah was known as Sairey, and the vicar was deaf or unfamiliar with his parishioners.

Thanks, Marquette. But none of those connect with my tree as far as I know.

I've never heard that name before (or at least only in a book - was it a Dicken's character?). I had assumed it was a made up diminutive. Have you come across it in FH?

I have a lot of women in my family waging perpetual warfare with the clergy over what their children should be named. Usually the child is baptised as Sarah, but is married or buried as Sairey (other spellings are available)

I suspect it is a regional variant. I have found it in Surrey and Norfolk, but not noticed it in other counties.

No worries. Sarah kept me busy on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Hope you can find the connection, although I know how difficult that can be.
