Ooh, this is good! I had a note I made some time ago saying her parents' marriage might be Edward Barton / Anne Wilcock 28 Oct 1760 at St John Preston, but I couldn't find any children to fill in the gap between then and Ellen's birth - now Lancs OPC has come up trumps! I've found 3 children to fill in that gap, so I'm sure that's the right marriage and can fill Anne's surname in above.

Have been trying to trace ancestors of Thomas Barton born 1810 at Preston. Lancashire OPC gives only one possibility. Born 22 Mar 1810, Bap. 29 Apr 1810 at St John's Preston.
Base child of Ellen Barton. I look for Ellen's Bap. possibly 18 May 1779, daub. of Thomas Barton and Jane, again at St John's Preston. I look for their marriage, possibly married 14 Feb 1775 at St John's Preston, Thomas Barton, Joiner and Jane Alsop.
Do you have any other suggestions for this line from Thomas born 1810?

I don't think your Ellen Barton is the same person as mine, Trell? My Ellen got married in 1787.

What information do you have about Thomas Barton, apart from his year and place of birth? Do you have him on any censuses? Did he marry? Have children? What was his occupation? When and where did he die? Did he leave a will? If you give us all the info that you have, it might make it easier for us to look for possible baptisms etc.

Margaret Kay - (X), Spinster, Elston in this Parish
Witness: John Woods, (X); Ann Ashton, (X)

I refer to my question to you yesterday about who the ancestors of Thomas Barton. I suggested his mother to be Ellen Barton. Thomas being her base child. I also gave suggestions as to her parents etc. Can you help any further?

Is this the family in 1841, at Balderstone?

1841 census ancestry
Thomas Burton 30 Farmer Y
Margaret Do 30 Y
Edward do 7 Y
-
Edward Burton 65 Independent (? not sure if that's what it says)
John Wall 17

The surname looks like Burton, but if you look at the names with an a in them on that page, such as Thomas and Margaret, those a's look like u's too.

Lancs OPC has Edmund's baptism down as Burton too, 6 Jul 1834 at St John Preston, occupation Elston, father's occupation husbandman.

If that is them on the 1841 census then I think it is likely that Thomas is a relative of the Edward who is age 65.

Thomas's ages on the other censuses:
1851 - 43
1861 - 52
1871 - 63
And on the burial 21 Apr 1873, and his death registration, his age is 65.

So this would suggest he was born around 1807-1809, not 1810. Of course ages on the censuses and on burials and deaths are not always accurate.

I will see if I can find anything else...

Yes, this is the same. Thank you.
