North Devon Journal 25 June 1936

Double Bigamy Case

A Barnstaple man, John Lionel Victor Mitchell, 44, salesman, Victoria Street, Newport, Barnstaple, who pleaded "guilty" to two charges of bigamy, was sentenced to nine months imprisonment at the Old Bailey on Tuesday.

It was stated that Mitchell, after his first wife died, married again in December, 1922. He left his wife in 1927, and in 1929 contracted the first bigamous marriage with Elsie Maud Wellington, now of Romford.

In May, 1934, he left her, and in April, 1935, went through a form of marriage with Agnes Hall, of Highbury.

This article has similar info:

Exeter and Plymouth Gazette 12 June 1936

but also states the marriage to Elsie was at the Wandsworth RO (at Clapham Junction), 20 Jun 1929 and to Agnes at the Islington RO, 18 Apr 1935.

The wife he left in 1927, Mary Orr, was still living at the date of the article.

The plot thickens, thank you x
happy New year to you and yours x

Merry 29-12-18 18:08

Yes, Happy New Year to you too!

Interesting that the article doesn't say whether there were any children from those marriages.

Merry 29-12-18 18:16

I wonder when Mary Orr/Mitchell did die, as he seems to have married again in 1938!! (perhaps he finally got a divorce)

Merry 29-12-18 18:50

When did he switch from Mitchley to Mitchell? Between the second marriage and the first bigamous one?

It's a shame you can't get the Old Bailey records for that time.
