I was born in Hanham as well. There was a Prewett family who lived in Jeffries Hill. South Gloucestershire burials are free to search on Bristol family history site but I can't see an obvious candidate for John. Hanham Abbots records come under Bitton. The name is also spelt Pruett. There were several small coal mines in the area.

Thank you Anne, I have found them transcribed as Prewett, Pruett and Pruitt.
I'll take a look at the Bristol site now.
