Sancton William Wood Bell

I am helping with someone's family, who has the glorious name of Sancton. The only understanding of the name is with the place in Yorkshire. There was a school master by the name of John Bell in the 1840/50s. From what I can see John's descendants ended up in South Africa.
Sancton WW Bell died in Sydney NSW in 1926, his father is named as George. His body was taken to Gunnedah where his headstone says he is aged 73 years.
Sancton (Index says Laveton) was married in 1882 at Coonabarabran to Louisa Jane Ray nee Gardiner.
At the moment we do not have the marriage cert and I am wondering if anyone of the forum might have info that may shed some light on his origins. Thanks. Julie

There's a marriage of an Edward Sancton of Brigham, Cumberland, to Sarah Bell of Brigham, Cumberland, 17 May 1831, at Gretna Hall, Dumfries, Scotland. Must be connected given both their surnames.

There's an online tree but it only has 1853 for his birth and nothing else, so I'd say they've taken that from the age at death.

With any luck the marriage cert should have his place of birth and parents' names. All the ones I have from about 1870 have that.

Well done Maggie.

Can't be two with that name....lol

He is in Wales in 1851 with his parents

name: Sancton Bell
age: 2
gender: Male
birthplace: Briton Ferry, Glamorganshire
relationship to head of household: Son
schedule type: Household

Need to check ancestry. Looks like his father's name is Edward then and not George.

Here he is transcribed as Saniton Bell! With his mother and siblings it doesn't say she's a widow unless I'm reading it wrong but Edward isn't listed.

Stack of siblings.

I don't have time to look for marriage need to go off and do something but if no one has found it by the time I get back I will look later.

OK.

Eldest two children born Middlesex, like their mother, then third born Cairo, then a swag in Surrey then Wales.

I wonder what sort of engineer dad was to travel around.

Mary's eldest daughter in 1851 is Mary E age 16, so Edward and Mary will probably have got married before civil registration. Nearest I can see is Edward Bell / Mary Ann Owen 14 Aug 1834 at St Pancras.
