Thanks Kate. I have those entries on an old list from when OH did ls of visits to our 'local' CRO. I'll have another play now to see if I can get anywhere. It would be good to link that Dorothy in!

I first looked at trying to find anything on Robert the husband of Dorothy Hillier who should have died after Aug 1685.

I found a will for a Robert Hellier signed 30 Jul 1697 and proved 20 Nov 1697 and a burial 4 Aug 1697 at Osmington which all fit together, however it would appear to most likely be for a younger Robert than the one I was after (hopefully a son of the other Robert?)

This is the jist:

Robert Hellier of Osmington husbandman

Brother John Hellier one shilling
Brother Richard Hellier one shilling
Brother Thomas Hellier one shilling
Kinsman Nicholas Hellier (then a few words I can't make sense of, but is he saying this Nicholas is the son of his brother?) forty shillings
Rest of goods and chattels to:
Brother Nicholas Hellier
Sister Elizabeth Hellier
Sister Mary Hellier

So now I just need to find some baptisms!

There's a burial for a Nicholas Hillier jr on 30 Oct 1699 at Osmington.

Also a burial Nicholas Hellier 21 Jan 1718 at Osmington

There's these two baps at Upwey which is under 5 miles from Osmington.

Thomas Hellier Baptism 27 Mar 1671 Upwey father Robert

There's this administration which is probably for the Richard Hellier mentioned in the will of Robert above:

HELLIARD Richard
HMS "Assurance" home parish: Osmington
Administrator: Nicholas HELLIARD, yeoman of Osmington, brother (so the man who was buried in 1718?)
Sureties: Administrator + Joseph BAKER, cooper of Weymouth & Melcombe Regis
17 Apr 1706
Ref: DA/A/1706 41

There are refs to a Nicholas Heyman alias Hellier at Fordington (close to Osmington) running a disreputable alehouse in 1617. Many of the 17thC PRs for Fordington have not survived.

lol When we first saw the parish register entry for John Hellier to Susannah we had nothing to cross ref it with and the film image of the PR at the Dorset CRO was poor. We took her name to be Cook(e), but I now realise it's actually Gook(e)!!

I've just found a will of a relation:

John Gook of Corfe Castle Dorset, will signed 3 June 1723.

Amongst others he gives:

unto Susanna the wife of John Hellier of Osmington in the said County of Dorset the sum of five pounds.

The will was proved 26 Aug 1724.

This is a mistranscription (correction now submitted)!

I'll change Susannah's name here now!
