Richard Gurren (OH's MMMMFF)

I don't know much about this one. What little I know comes from son Edward's immigration records.

Name - "official" name and what they were known as Richard Gurren
Date and place of birth about 1780, maybe in Kells, Meath, Ireland
Names of parents not known
Date and place of baptism - if applicable not located, probably not Catholic
Details of each of his or her marriages - if any married Ann, before abt 1809

Only known child Edward born about 1809

The TOGG link for Edward: http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/f...=edward+gurren

Occupation(s) - if any
Addresses where they lived (including county if in UK) - and please list which censuses you have or haven't found him/her on (if s/he lived in census times!).

Date, place and cause of death before 1856, when Edward arrived in Sydney

Date and place of burial.
Details of will / administration of their estate - if applicable

I've found a possible baptism for Edward on Roots Ireland - info on the Edward Gurren thread. If you search on there for baptisms of children of Richard and Ann Gurren in Co Meath, there are 3 matches between 1780 and 1820, including Edward. Edward is in 1798 and one is in 1800, the other one in 1802.

I should think it would be worth Marquette looking at the pay-to-view info on the baptisms of Richard and Ann's children (or at least one of them!) to see whether an occupation and / or place of residence is shown.

Good plan.

About the Flax Growers List 1796

To boost the production of linen, the Irish Linen Board awarded individuals either spinning wheels or looms depending on how much flax was planted - one acre = 4 spining wheels; 5 acres = 1 loom. Awards were made to 60,000 people. The list can be searched here:

Thanks Shona and Kite,

I think I will have to get some credits for the Irish info - Edwards children, at least some of them, are there also.

There is also a death in Ireland in 1891 which might be one of the girls, so that needs investigating.

Actually, now I look at it harder, a 1798 birth for Edward looks much more sensible that 1809 - he did say that he was 47 when he departed/arrived, but I doubt a poor flax growers son would have married when he was 20. And then he died in 1875 - in his late seventies rather than sixties, makes much more sense.

And that probably means Richard was born somewhat earlier than 1780, more like 1770 or earlier.

Luckily its school holidays here next two weeks and I don't have to work, so I can spend lots of time on-line and delve into OH's Irish ancestors !

Regards

Diane
