Address query
 

My 2g aunt was sent from India to London for schooling in 1890, specifically Hanover Street School in Islington.

The record gives a home address of 13 Colebrook Terrace. I guess this could be an address in India but I doubt it. Can anyone find out who lived there or tell me how? I tried the electoral rolls but without a name I can't get an answer and the surname (Bridges) didn't work. My 2g aunt is Louisa Bridges.

I found something saying that Colebrook Terrace is now called Duncan Terrace. So looking at a modern A-Z, it is parallel to Colebrook Row.

The 1891 census street index on TNA says that Colebrook Terrace was already part of Duncan Terrace then:

Did you ever read A Little Princess, Toni?
Guess it's not a book you'd have about the house these days, but it describes the sort of school your aunt would have lived in.

The link in post #1 says her previous school was Warrender Park in Edinburgh. She was only at Hanover Street School from 2 Jun 1890 to 18 Oct 1890. It doesn't look as though it was a boarding school, and it wasn't a private school either, so not much like in A Little Princess. Here is a picture of it:

Then in the 1895 directory, Miss Thompson is at 48 Duncan Terrace and John Scott, tooth brush maker, is at 49 Duncan Terrace:

So 13 Colebrook Terrace was probably renumbered as 46 Duncan Terrace.

But I guess they had moved in Oct 1890 and that's why Louisa left the school then.

Sadly I could not work out who Louisa may have been living with. I was hoping it was some family that I could identify but I did not recognise any of the names.

Phoenix I'm not familiar with the story A Little Princess. The whole family seem to have received an education. I have a photo of my great grandma in graduation clothing. I have it in my head she went to university but I could be wrong.

I don't think Louisa was with her immediate family, I was hoping for a relative I know to be related to the Bridges family.

I wonder why she moved schools? Islington isn't far from where her father grew up but there is no Edinburgh connection that I know of.

Are you sure the Louisa at Hanover Street School is yours, Toni?
