Well I have sent for Mary Ann's birth certificate - the one Merry saw (Bethnal Green one) but there were two for 1838 one registered Bethnal Green and one Shoreditch.

It's a fine line around that area between Bethnal Green and Shoreditch so I hope I picked the right one. I also sent for Charlotte's death cert well I hope it's Charlotte. I think Mary Ann also died before the 1851 census.

So will have Charlotte's maiden name from Mary Ann's birth cert hopefully if it's the right one. But have to perhaps send for John's death cert to see who registered it just for curiosity but I don't think he ever married Elizabeth Price and I have a feeling that Price was her married name or even a middle name...

There's a John Hughes/ Charlotte Goodwin marriage at St John Hackney 7 Sept 1817?

Witnesses John Larcher and what looks like Benj. ??ook

Is the Thomas Hughes listed above him in 1861 a son?

There is this baptism which is a possibility:

Day: 17
Month: September
Year: 1797
Forename: John
Othernames:
Surname: Hughes
Fathers forenames: George
Fathers occupation: Coal Meter
Mothers forenames: Catherine
Birth date:
Address: Pennington Street
Location of church: Stepney
Parish: St George In The East
Church address: Cannon Street Road
Entry No: 1541
Source Ref: NX092/186

Pennington Street is very close to Shoreditch.

Yes that is his son Thomas and my OH's ancestor William Hughes older brother. John had 14 children with Charlotte before she died!!

I have seen that marriage hopefully when the birth cert arrives it'll confirm the maiden name of Charlotte.

Thank you - it's a shame that John Hughes is such a common name in the East End then.

I do have a feeling that maybe a generation back from John that they are Irish - I know Hughes is a Welsh name but I just have a feeling that Charlotte was possible descended from Irish by the names of her children.

Got the last child's birth cert which was the right Mary Ann which I think is a miracle and Charlotte's name was Goodwin so that's the right marriage thank you.

Also got Charlotte's death certificate just waiting for some deciphering for the cause of death.

Oh and it looks like Benjamin Crook was a witness on another marriage on the same page so maybe a professional witness.
