Lynn, could you give us some details from the marriage certificate? What was her father's occupation?

ElizabethHerts 16-04-10 16:20

Oh, who did she marry? :d

Lynn the Forest Fan 16-04-10 19:43

Sorry I have added the groom's name Samuel James Stowell & according to the marriage cert, her father's occupation was "deceased" :d, which was odd because her fil was also deceased, but his occupation was listed as "soldier"

According to 1891 census, she was in Sheffield, Yorks in 1869 where son Phillip was born and in Scotland in 1876 when daughter Marian was born. (and from 1881, in Ireland when Francis was born in 1871 and Scotland when Douglas was born in 1875).

Cannot see any freebmd entries for Ellen Bingham born in Canterbury abt 1842 - two in Sheffield, one in Nottinghamshire, but there is one for Ellen BANGHAM in Canterbury in Sep 1842. The 1851 census shows her father to be David.

Thanks Di. Her husband was in the army & she was with him in Ireland & his battalion did travel up to Sheffield in 1868 when Philip was born. He then went to the Ayrshire Yeomanry & died in Ayr. On the birth certs for the 2 younger children, her maiden name is confirmed as being Bingham.
I have contacted Kent reg office for her birth cert, but they have no record of it. I have found an Ellen Bingham c1836 with father John in Canterbury in 1841, but can find no trace of them in 1851.
Ellen did give her birth place as Canterbury in all the censuses

The IGI is showing children for John Bingham and Sophia, Frances and Jane, as well as Ann, Elizabeth, Albinia, and Ann, born 1821-1831 and baptised in Fordwich. Perhaps this might give some clues to finding them.

Thats interesting Di, I will have to have a look at that. Thanks :)

The IGI also shows a marriage for a Sophia Bingham in Woolwich in 1845 - no spouse is shown as its a submitted entry. I found the equivalent in freebmd, but there are lots of spouses. Perhaps John died before 1851 and the family is hiding under the new husbands name !?

Lynn the Forest Fan 18-04-10 08:33

I had already made a note of that marriage, but as you say, there are a number of possible spouses & I haven't been able to work out which was the right one. I did find Ellen Bingham 1836 in 1861 working as a nurse in Surrey, but I don't seem to have made a note of the details.
