Bourton does look likely to be a variant of Burton so I would say it's worth investigating that William Bourton baptism.

My concern now is, having found that couple living in Wanborough, is this the same man, from just the other side of Swindon! The reasons I thought it was promising now seem to be the same ones that make me think I was wrong!

Sue, looking at him in 1851, I would have thought his place of birth was Pyrton, Oxfordshire not Purton, Wilts - Pyrton is near the town of Watlington and they have visitors from Bensington (now Benson) and Chalgrove, both of which are in that area.
