Bitten the bullet

Have always been puzzled by ex's great-uncle's marriage. Victor's wife was 15 years older than him, he was rumoured to be gay, they married quite late.

I couldn't find any info about Mildred the marriage, in which she is indexed with the same surname as her married name. But there's no corresponding birth and I've found her and Victor listed together on the electoral roll decades before the wedding!

Without her real name I can't find her birth or find her on the 1939 register though I do have her birthdate.

So I bit the bullet and ordered the marriage cert. I strongly suspect that Mildred was married before and only able to marry after first husband died. Not sure her details will be correct as her full name was Florence Mildred but she dropped the Florence some time prior to the marriage. Hoping she will be honest about who her father was!

Fingers crossed.

It's always exciting to have a certificate to look forward to, Nell.
I hope you find the information you need.

I can't remember the last time I ordered one, Elizabeth. I've finally got the bug again, having thought I would be doing a lot more during lock down and then being distracted by other things.

It's just for my own curiosity. I'm also puzzled as to why when Mildred died the probate record doesn't state who probate was granted to.

If the marriage was between 1939 and about 1990 she should show on the register with the name she was using at that time, but also the surname of her future husband.

Yes, she does, but it's the same name as the man she married. It's not her birth name.

Merry 18-10-20 17:25

Oh, OK - in an earlier post I thought you were saying you couldn't find her in 1939! :D

Fingers crossed she doesn't tell any porkies!

Nell 18-10-20 17:29

Yes, Merry, I can't! She's not using the surname Ledger then, so it'll either be her maiden name or a married name which I don't know!

If you mean the probate index, it stopped showing that information at a certain date. I don't know exactly when that was off the top of my head.

Isn't this her?
