Ant & Dec's DNA Journey on ITV

A 2-parter, part 1 on Sunday 10th Nov at 9 p.m. on ITV and part 2 on Monday, same time.

Olde Crone 09-11-19 16:00

These two are not my favourite people but I dare say I will watch it anyway! Thanks for the reminder.

Had part two on in the background last night.

Stripping out the fuss, it simply seemed to be saying:

  • Ancestry can be used to find second cousins
  • If you are a bloke, your markers go back to Adam (or at least a very long way!)
  • If two people's families originate from a small community, the odds are they are related.

Who knew?

But it left me feeling very lucky that my family stories seemed to go back a whole century earlier than theirs did.

Watched the first part but not overly impressed.

No-one in the village had taken the DNA test so it was the TV company that instigated it and found matches.

I'm still trying to find Irish DNA matches for ancestors c1799 born Ireland? and c1860 born Co Fermanagh without success.

I only lasted 20 minutes. It was the Ant and Dec show, not a programme about dna really. Perhaps I have missed something but I don't think so!

I wasn't convinced that they had taken Dec's Donnelly line back two generations just by finding that gravestone, unless it had his grandfather's name (or whichever ancestor was the furthest back they knew before) on it too. Otherwise it could just have been some other family.

Also, did I miss something, or did they never explain why their friend's uncle at the beginning thought there was something wrong with their DNA results and had them do the tests all over again? I was expecting there to be some shock revelation connected with that.

Kate, I agree re the gravestone. Also, when they drew the tree on screen to reflect the new ancestor they seemed to have the name of the generation in between worked out with dates too (I think).

I had forgotten about the friend's uncle and the retest, but I'm sure there was nothing more about that afterwards.

They never showed their ethnicity estimates, did they? Was there maybe something unexpected in those?

Merry 13-11-19 22:29

I didn't know if that's where the Syrian link came from?

kiterunner 13-11-19 22:57

The Syrian link was from a mitochondrial DNA test.
