Lewis George Cole

The Cole family has two veterans named Lewis George Cole, who were cousins. Both were named after their grandparents, George and Emma Lewis (Leake) Cole.

Lewis George Cole (1) was the second son of Stanley Llewellyn Cole and his wife Isabella Jane (nee Moorley). He was born 12 Jul 1891 at Glebe NSW.

He enlisted on 19th August 1914 into the 1st Battalion AIF. At the time he was an engineering draughtsman. On 5 April 1915, he boarded the HMAT (His Majesty's Australian Transport) Minnewaska and proceeded to Egypt.

Lew was wounded in the second or third wave of the Gallipoli landings on 25 April 1915 and returned to Egypt with a wound to the shoulder. While recuperating there, he was found to have a Hernia which was operated on in August 1915, then he was returned to Australia on HMAT Euripides on 15 Sept 1915 and discharged on medical grounds.

But this is not the end of the story for Lew. He was able to join the third course of the NSW Aviation School at Richmond NSW. He won his pilots certificate and under agreement with the British government, left for England in October 1917. I understand the pilots made their own way there.

Lew ended up at a training ground in Scotland, and while there, must have paid a visit to Perth, Scotland, to the family of his sister's late fiance, David Stewart, who was KIA at Lone Pine Gallipoli on 7 Aug 1915.

I don't think Lew ever flew in the War Zones, but he did maintain contact with the Stewart family and married Amelia Stewart (David's sister) on 27 Jul 1918 in Luncarty Perth.

Lewis and Amelia (Amy) had only one child, David Llewellyn Cole, who was born in Scotland in 1919 before they returned to Australia.

Lewis George Cole (2), was the second son of George Graham (Graham) and Sarah (Shaddock) Cole of Fernbank Nursery, Tyabb, Victoria. He was born on 17 April 1888 and enlisted 15th Sept 1914.

His brothers, Godfrey Laurence Cole and Harry Theodore Cole also served in WW1, Harry was killed at Harbonnieres in France in 1918.(More on them later).

Originally appointed to the 15th Battalion, he was made Lance Corporal and transferred to the Light Horse Brigade Headquarters Supply Section.

His records show he was at Gallipoli in July 1915 with the Mediterranean Expedtionary Force, and returned to Egypt where in Feb 1916 he was admitted to hospital with Appendicitis. After recovering he was promoted to Corporal of the 3rd Light Horse Supply Depot.

In Aug 1917, he was again in hospital, with diptheria, and after recovering he was promoted to Lieutenant. In Dec 1918, he was promoted to Captain, and was mentioned in despatchs for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty for successfully getting his camel convoys of supplies through to his brigade while being heavily pressed by the enemy."He showed great coolness through out".

In July 1919, he returned to Tyabb, to the family nursery and orchards and was active in his local fruitgrowers society and other community activities.

Both men re-enlisted at the outbreak of World War 2 but due to their age, neither served overseas.

As well as Lew's brothers, these cousins, also served in WW1. All are descendents of Guy Cole and his wives, Elizabeth Nutt and Martha Gearing. All except Harry returned to Australia.
