Merging ancestry trees
 

I currently have a tree for me and a tree for OH.

I'm thinking of merging the trees into 1 tree so if the kids and I, or any other family, do DNA tests down the track we can all be on the one tree. Is there any way to merge them? Both trees are bare bones only, not my full tree but I'd rather not have to type it all in again from scratch.

As far as I know, you would need to download the two GEDCOMs and merge them within a family tree software program on your computer, then export a new GEDCOM from that program and upload that to ancestry.

Thanks Kate. That seems like hard work too but probably easier than typing it all in from scratch.

You can go to each profile and add to the other tree but you would have to match up each couple and the children to each couple.

They are both on the one profile Maggie. just separate trees for each family.

Just a thought - how do thrulines work if the DNA test taker is not the home person?

I meant each ancestry person profile for each person on the tree.

If you go to a person profile in the tree on the top right menu is tools, down that menu is 'save to tree' if you click on it you can then choose another tree to save that person to. But like I say you then have to connect the relationships up to each person otherwise they are just floating about on the tree on their own.

As you know, I'm waiting for OH's results.

A few days ago I was asked to link him to a tree, which I did. I was then asked to identify him in the tree by clicking on his name. I assume that now when his results are through they will automatically connect to his name in the tree.

Maggie I worked out what you meant. It was quicker to download the 2 trees merge and add them back again.

Eliza I think you are right. I started my tree after I got the results.
