Helen Fiske

She was born 26 June 1884 New York, daughter of Haley Fiske and Mary Garrettina Mulford. She married Rev Edward Dering Evans 9 January 1917 New York. He was b 1877 Liscard.

Last "positive sighting" alive she was taken to Bellevue Hospital New York in 1933.

She had many mystical experiences and in 1947 published The Garden of the Little Flower and other Mystical Experiences

Prefaces to the book, and reviews at the time speak of her in the present tense, so presumably she is still alive at the time of publication.

On the death of her father in 1929, she is mentioned specifically (as Helen Fiske Evans) and money is left for her use absolutely, which is different from her siblings.

Post marriage Edward appears on a number of passenger lists to various places, but I have not seen her travelling with him.

1939 in the UK, he says he is married, but there is no wife with him
Edward died in the UK in 1949 with probate to Lloyds Bank

I cannot see her in USA census 1920 - 1940 on FMP, I don't have World Ancestry.

Can anyone find what happened to her? I am wondering if the hospital admission is for mental health reasons and maybe she was in an asylum and therefore not obvious on census documents.

It would be nice to be able to tidy her up with a death!

I've been having a look, but no luck as yet.

There's a Google books snippet that looks to be an extract from her father's will, describing her as "Helen Fiske Evans whose address is in care of Miss Gaddis, 218 Ridgewood Road, Baltimore 10, Maryland".

Did you have that?

I've found that address on the 1930 census, but there's a Johnston family there.

There are references in one of her books to the Misses Caroline B and Ola S Gaddis.

They're living together at a different address in Baltimore in 1930, with a lodger.

VoilĂ ! They're still together in Baltimore in 1940 with 3 female lodgers, one of whom is Helen Evans (widow):

Possible death in Baltimore in 1949 (Helen F Evans):

Ah, I've just had a proper look at the census, and Caroline Gaddis and her sister were superintendents of a nursing home, so it looks like Helen was one of the residents.

Well done! But why couldn't I find her in 1940?!!

She is not actually widowed as her husband died in 1949, but the rest of the information all fits.

It looks like they took in patients, 1930, their lodger is a patient.

Thanks for the input!
