Married after certificate?
 

I'm going through my tree and adding all FMP images for Staffordshire to the tree, rather than them being in folders. I'm also checking for new images, especially banns for married couples.

Reading one parish entry it says the couple were married after certificate, certificate being written where banns would normally be written.

Does anyone know what this might mean? I can't find any record of banns or licence being issued.

From 1837, you could be married by Registrar's certificate.
Is Holborn a locality in the area?
An alternative might be that they were both working in London, but came home to marry, waving the certificate (which I assume was cheaper than a licence)

To marry by banns, at least one party would need to be resident in the parish.

It was sometimes used for non-conformists, I think.

Holborn is somewhere in the parish they were married in. I have to admit I had to google to confirm that though.

The Walmsleys seem to give me a bit of grief so getting a certificate, which I have never heard of, does fit that bill, although they are not direct ancestors so I'm surprised they bothered to confuse me. I don't think they were non-conformists, at least religion-wise. Children out of wedlock, baptising children more than once and in different names, juggling surnames and not being clear who daddy is, no problem.

Have/would the certificates survived, does anyone know? There are some banns and marriage licences for Staffordshire on FMP but no indication of ay certificates.
