38th of the St Wilfrid's School, Haywards Heath to lose his life in the Great War.

Edward was born in 1896 to in Haywards Heath to William Edward and Mary Ann Gasson. His father William had also been a pupil at St Wilfrid’s and had served in the Royal Sussex Regiment before Edward was born and re-enlisted in the Labour Corps during WW1. In 1911 the family lived at Jireh Cottage, Petlands Road and his father was a bricklayer.

Edward was killed in action in Egypt on 26 Mar 1917. He has no known grave, but is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial.

At his father’s request Edward’s outstanding pay of £10 3s 4d was paid to Edward’s mother Mary , while the War Gratuity of £10 10s went to his father.

In WW2 Edward's father William and his second wife Dorothy, who was 30 years his junior and whom he had just married were found dead in their air raid shelter in North Road, Haywards Heath on 15th October 1940, they had been overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from a brazier.
