Where was he born?

Please can anyone help read this?

It is for John McNally, aged 44 (7th person from the top).

1851, 1861 and 1871 say Scotland.
1891 says Sunderland.

This is the 1881.

Thanks for looking.

What awful writing. I can't begin to fit a place-name to it. I wonder if it ends N K (i.e. Not Known). His wife and children are all born in County Durham (inferred from place-names).

Hi UJ.

I thought maybe the bit at the end was NE (for North East?), but it could equally be NK or N/E.

It's the first word I thought might give me some clues!

Merry 18-05-19 21:00

Looks like "(something) North N.K."

Merry 18-05-19 21:22

His marriage record (transcript) says his father was Francis.

Name: John Mcnally
Gender: Male
Marital status: Single
Age: 28
Birth Date: 1830
Marriage Date: 6 Jun 1858
Marriage Place: Southwick, Southwick, Durham, England
Father: Francis Mcnally
Spouse: Isabella Nicholson

Not sure that helps! lol I note he's aged a bit. (EDIT - no he hasn't - bad maths!)

I can only get "In the North NK" but I'm not very sure about the beginning of it.

Thanks everyone.

That's him Merry - Had got to England by 1841 and both his brother, sister and mother all just say "Scotland".

Merry 19-05-19 07:23

Did his brother and sister marry? Did they say Francis for their father?

Which 1841 census do you think is the right one?

kiterunner 19-05-19 10:35

A tree on ancestry says this is the 1841 census entry, with all of them (except Francis?) down as born in Scotland:

Sister, Eleanor gives him as her Father when she marries - she married James Veitch who is with them in 1841.
She also registers his death in 1847.
I have been unable to trace the brother Peter forwards (although it is only an assumption that he is his brother).
