I suddenly wondered whether I should have posted this - I know pretty well most facts re. Joseph Thomas Purkis, and don't really need any help. But then I reassured myself by re-reading Gwynne's advice saying that even if you know about your ancestor you can post so the search engines pick it up.

The one thing I would like to know is where he is buried (or whether he was cremated).

I'm nosy - did Jane come from the Hatch family that supplied all the registrars in Portsmouth?

William Hatch (born 1 Nov 1804, died 1881) was the Licensed Parish Clerk and Registrar of Births Marriages and Deaths (in Portsea). I'm not sure how large an area he covered.
William was Charlotte Jane's elder brother - she was born 28 April 1812.

When Charlotte and William's father Aaron Hatch died on 16 May 1858, it was his son William Hatch whose name is on the death certificate as Registrar, and it is James Purkis (Charlotte's husband) who is the informant!

There is another Registrar in this family -

William Hatch had a daughter - Annie Cranley Hatch. Annie married John Harfield Hatch. They had a daughter - Annie Mary Hatch. She married Henry Coury Cleverly - who was Registrar of Marriages on the 1901 census.

Oooh, that's very spooky! I was just telling OH about when I used to stay overnight with a friend when I was at primary school (her mum used to save the gold top milk for our tea Ugh), and where did they live? West Cliff Road, Bournemouth! I'm afraid Stagsden isn't there any more as it's the site of a black of flats called Tower Court - where mum and dad considered moving to in 1970 lol
