Here she is in service in Blackburn working for a family named Johnson: William 47, Hannah 48 and David 14. I'm sure I have the right Mary Ann because when she marries Thomas Berry on December 30 of that same year, the witnesses are William Dewhurst on the first line, followed by two signatures together on the second line: W. Johnson D. Johnson. Wm Dewhurst is on the same census page, the neighborhood publican. So that nails it for me. Can anyone make out what's meant by the chicken scratches in the employment column on the 1841 for Wm Johnson?

It says Sh K, which I think must mean Shop Keeper (there is a Shop K on the previous double page.)

Thank you, Kite!

I'm pretty certain this must be her father here at the bottom of the left-hand page in the 1841 census:
John Laycock 1841 census

So might her mother be Sarah? Needs further research.

I give some reasons why I am fairly confident these are the right Laycocks on my thread for my GGF James Berry, Mary Ann's son.

Have to leave this now. I'm meant to be traveling in the morning.

I still have not nailed down any baptism record and do not know if the Sarah with John Laycock in Sutton on the 1841 is Mary Ann's mother or not. Brick wall awaiting demolition.
