You might be best to get the birth cert of one of James and Elizabeth's children to see Elizabeth's maiden name and then it might be easier to look for their marriage.

Yes I shall do that when I get paid on Monday :)

Birth certificate was ordered for Jane Benge James Benge and Elizabeth ? daughter who is OH's great grandmother not arrived yet!!!!

Jane Benge's birth certificate arrived now filled in Elizabeth's maiden name it is Sawyer but I still can't find the marriage suspect it just might be one not on Ancestry Marriages and Banns but I also can't find it on the GRO index either.

There is a marriage for Henry Benge and Ann Watkins on the IGI - extracted.
14 OCT 1822 St. Marylebone, London, England

Could this be James' parents?

There is a tree on Ancestry with this parentage for James so it's possible but I can't see how they go from William and James in the Whitechapel Workhouse to Henry Benge and Ann Watkins because if you trace what they have on that Ancestry tree the dates don't add up and so I'm dubious I expect they are James and Wlliam's parents but I can't find any evidence yet this family seem to be all over the place. I don't have anything but James' baptism to say his father was Henry Benge and his mother Ann!

Edit to say: I also should have said the only reason I think that baptism is him because on all the census it says Whitechapel for birth place but to be honest until find his and Elizabeth's marriage I can't even confirm that to be honest! I'd like to find the 1851 for both him and Elizabeth to maybe connect it all up but I haven't been able to find one for either. Their first child was Catherine as far as I can work out from the census was born 1852 but that means nothing maybe they married a lot later or even a lot earlier although their estimated birth dates from census would only take the marriage back to 1848-1850!

I suppose you've seen this and it's only the surnames that match....

Frederick BENGE and Harriet SAWYER Maidstone Mar 1863.

Can't see anything else at all.

maggie_4_7 21-09-10 12:05

Nope never seen that.

I do think the Benge family came from Kent originally although I don't have any conclusive evidence for that yet. Possibly a coincidence a Benge marrying a Sawyer in Kent!

maggie_4_7 21-09-10 13:43

I think I should say from looking at the tree on Ancestry even though some of the data on there is very iffy. I think Ann died and Henry left James and William in the workhouse and then went back to Kent married again and had more children!!!

I must say that going by that tree Ann was about 62 when she had James so I expect that was a bit of a problem which is why she died!!!

Yeah I know it sounds like a 'B' movie but its possible. :)
