Looking for information regarding Annie CARRINGTON’s father. Annie was born to Elisabeth LETT on 20 February 1884 in Riseley, Bedfordshire, England. Her marriage record indicates her father is listed as Elijah CARRINGTON; however, his death date is 22 March 1880. Annie immigrated to America in 1906 to settle in Raritan, Middlesex, New Jersey, United States. She married Gustaf Adolf YOURSTONE on 13 October 1911 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, United States. Died 22 February 1959 in Franklin Township, Sommerset, New Jersey, United States. Email [email protected].

Annie was not born Annie or Ann Carrington. She was born with her mother's name.

There is this entry for the 1901 Census:

Annie Carrington Pauper Single 16 General Servant - Dom born Riseley, Bedfordshire

It seems she used Carrington as her surname.

Isn't it likely her father's name was Smart? (plenty of Smarts in Riseley!)

Interestingly, Ancestry, Findmypast and FreeBMD all have the registration under the name Carrington. I've seen the Ancestry image and that shows Carrington.

That's odd, Merry. I went straight to the GRO.

It looks as if her moter Elizabeth Lett married Elijah Carrington, Elijah died, Elizabeth conceived Ann/Annie and when the birth was registered Elizabeth got tangled up. The child should have been recorded with the surname Carrington, even if Elijah could not possily have been her father.
