I'm moving this thread to the Research board.

It would have been nice if you had posted up all the GRO refs for the children.

In 1891 William is aged 29 born Salford. Mary Jane is aged 28 and born Haydock. They have children Joseph 6 and Lucy 4 both born Salford.

There are quite a few William Hills registered in Salford district around 1861/2 so you will need the marriage cert before you can do anything more.

In 1901 Wm says Manchester and Mary Jane says St Helens. She has aged an extra two years (now 40).

Qwackers, there are lots of free resources so you could research them yourself until you hit a brick wall!

Can you say where you got that list of children please? I am not able to find some of them.

There are some baptisms on LAN-OPC, but possibly another couple called William and Mary Jane Hill from 1891 onwards, when they have moved to Prescot. Do you have an occupation for William or an address please.

There is a public tree on Ancestry whose owner cites "certified copy of an entry of marriage" as the source for their marriage details:
9 Oct 1881 parish church, Salford. (Lancashire BMD says St Simon, Salford).
But they haven't posted up an image of the marriage record.
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/ca...jane_eccleston

They have his parents as John Hill and Matilda Walton with this as the 1881 census entry:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/interacti...53714039/facts

1881 census
53 Cheetwood Lane, Cheetham, Lancs
John Hill Head Mar 46 House Painter Lanc Manchester
Matilda Do Wife Do 47 Do Do
William Do Son Unm 19 Engraver Do Do
Elizabeth Do Daur Do 17 Do Do
George Do Son 15 Scholar Do Do.

but I wonder whether that is right, because the William on that census is an engraver and by 1891 yours is a coffee works labourer.

I think you do need the marriage cert to see father's details.

Oooh, Google came up with an image of the marriage cert on FamilySearch!

https://www.familysearch.org/photos/...9-october-1881

It says that William's father was John Hill, painter, and William is a machine engraver, which does fit with that 1881 census entry linked to in post #8. So it looks as though the tree on Ancestry is right about that.

Oh that's good Kate. I wasn't ready to believe the tree on Ancestry!
