Unsure which death to search

Hi Folks,

I have Arthur Herbert Chenery who was my Grandfather's nephew, born 1898 in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. He is on the 1911, living with his grandparents. I have a scanned newspaper article of his grandparents 50th wedding anniversary which mentions most of their relatives, including a Bertie Chenery (grandson) who was killed in the war at only 17 years. This, I am assuming, is Arthur Herbert. I have found no record of his death in the UK, so am guessing that commemoration on the CWGC of an A. Chenery, a rifleman, killed in 1915 at Ypres (Menin Gate) is the correct chap. There are no records on the Military section on Ancestry - service record, pension, medal card etc.

Would there perhaps have been a mention in one of the local Bury St Edmunds papers announcing his death during WW1?

Anybody help please?

Chris

Must surely be him, as the rifleman killed with army number 5753 was b in Bury St Edmunds and was definitely called Arthur:

UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919 (on Ancestry)
Name: Arthur Chenery
Birth Place: Bury, St. Edmunds
Residence: Charing Cross, Middx.
Death Date: 2 Aug 1915
Enlistment Location: St. James, London
Rank: Rifleman
Regiment: Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own)
Battalion: 9th Battalion.
Number: 5753
Type of Casualty: Killed in action

His medal card is on Ancestry too, but no army service record.

Gawd, Merry! You're brilliant - how on earth did I miss all that info????? I'm off now to take a gander. That must be my chap, in which case I shall get in touch with the local B st E rags.

Thank you sooo much!

Chrissie

Probably no connection, but we have a funeral director's called Chenery here in Hitchin.

Nell - we also have two Chenery companies in Norfolk. One is a pretty big coach company, and the other is a fruiterer! I think our Chenery lot were originally from Suffolk (millions of 'em!) and then scattered all around England in the last century.

Merry - I found all that little lot on Ancestry, but I can't imagine how I missed all those records!.

I even found some new stuff on Alfred Charles Chenery (my Grandfather's brother). I knew he had died during the Boer War in Naauport, South Africa, but even found his Service Record which ran to about 7 pages! This lot must have been updated fairly recently, as his record wasn't there quite a while ago.

My thanks and appreciation once again,

Chris

Rifleman Arthur Chenery

Many years later I know, but Rifleman Chenery had as legatees his grandfather Arthur Herbert and grandmother Emmeline. I am researching the Bury St Edmunds roll of honour.
Looks like this lad was illegitimate, possibly Susannah Emma Chenery was mother (later EVANS) Must have lied about his age on enlistment.

www.undyingmemory.net is mine and Bury St Ed will be added when complete (only about 450 more men to do!)
