Have since found Thomas' Settlement exam dated July 1860 in Bethnal Green which states that he had lived in Foleshill, Warwickshire. Which settles one question!

There is another statement about being born in Shoreditch. Would someone else please have a look to see whether they think he's talking about himself or his father. Bottom right hand page.

My first thought was his father, but it could be read either way.

That's what I thought initially Lindsay but there is a word/abbreviation in the line above "Shoreditch" that may be "ext" (short for Examinant?) that would make it about Thomas jnr. He was born on the edge of Shoreditch/Spitalfields so it is possibly him. I don't have a pob for his father so I was hopeful that it referred to him :)
